Karapatan to DOJ Sec Guevarra: Your irresponsibility is endangering lives

On August 6, in a budget hearing at the House of Representatives, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra admitted that the DOJ did not personally verify information before tagging 649 people in the petition to proscribe the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the New People’s Army (NPA) as terrorist organizations. Guevarra further added that the names and aliases all came from the intelligence units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Nat’l ID system, a wolf in sheep’s clothing

“Time and again, we have reiterated that this law, the national identification system, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay on the ratification of the national ID system, adding that this will lead to wholesale rights violations, primarily of the people’s rights to freedom of movement and privacy, right against surveillance, and right to unhampered and non-discriminatory provision of social services.

Unchecked, arbitrary military powers under ML suffocating indigenous communities in Mindanao

“The Philippine military’s design for the communities in Lianga, Surigao del Sur is not just one of a quick execution of individuals, similar to the work of their paramilitary minions in September 2015. This is systemic, brutal and cruel persecution of an entire community in defense of their ancestral land by denying them security, food, water, medicine, and other necessities. Essentially, this is State terror compounded by the unchecked, arbitrary powers of the military under Mindanao martial law,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay.

PNP, NutriAsia use tanim-suspect scheme to criminalise workers, their supporters and journalists - Karapatan

“Philippine National Police and NutriAsia used an inmate who has already been imprisoned since 2016, beat him to force him into a script of being among the striking workers, and used him as evidence to justify the brutality during the dispersal is an act of imbecility. This is reflective of how the PNP uses false stories to justify their crimes, and their complete disregard for the people’s rights. We strongly condemn the cheap tricks of these disgusting, spineless, shameless, and lying con artists,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay.

Karapatan condemns recent violent dispersal, arrest of NutriAsia workers, supporters and journalists

"We are enraged by the violent dispersal of workers who have already been victimized by the company’s unfair labor practices. We likewise condemn NutriAsia, its security personnel and the Philippine National Police in Bulacan for this brutality. The NutriAsia management even had the audacity to claim in a statement that a gunshot was fired from the ranks of the workers when evidence and testimonies attest that a mass was ongoing prior to the dispersal. NutriAsia has the audacity to call for compliance to the rule of law when it has primarily violated the rights of workers, ignored labor laws and general labor standards," said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay on the violent dispersal on the afternoon of July 30, 2018, and NutriAsia’s statement thereafter.

The mission team members were set to investigate reports of rights violations due to militarization in Atimonan, including the alleged death of 2 residents from Montes Callagan, Atimonan. The perpetrators attacked the mission team’s vehicle while they were still in Brgy. Bilukaw, Pitugo, Quezon, around 30 kilometers from the team’s destination. Bullets hit the vehicle’s wheels but none from the team were hurt.
