Karapatan: Duterte regime’s “Red October” spin meant to justify further rights violations

“This alleged destabilization plot is an underhanded move to justify further repression and rights violations against organizations and personalities considered as critics of the Duterte government. Concocting lies and fantastic conspiracy theories is natural for insecure and fascist governments . If October passes without much ado, we are almost sure “Red November”, Red December”, and “Red 2019” will be this regime’s next conspiracy theory. Ridiculous!” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay on the alleged “Red October” destabilization plot against Duterte.

Karapatan to the military: Quit giving excuses, transfer Palparan to Bilibid immediately!

“I did not kill them, I just inspired the triggermen” - Jovito Palparan, in an interview with Rappler

“Gone is the arrogant soldier to which the above statement is attributed to. No longer is retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan, Jr. as willing to claim that he “inspired the triggermen”, especially now that victims of rights violations perpetrated by him and soldiers under his command won a case against him. Now, he peddles the image of pure innocence, shamelessly presenting himself as a victim. Truly disgusting!” said Karapatan deputy secretary general Roneo Clamor on Palparan’s continued claim of innocence over the guilty verdict promulgated by the Malolos, Bulacan Regional Trial Court Branch 15 on September 17, 2018 for charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention of missing UP students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeno.

Both Mapua University and the University of Sto. Tomas were on high alert after bomb threats sent via text messages circulated on social media on September 18 and September 19, respectively. The threats were allegedly sent by the New People’s Army (NPA), a matter vehemently denied by the group, even calling the bomb scare as “cowardly threats”.

Authorities who investigated the reports said that it was a false alarm in both cases.

Leaving the ICC, dismissing the IPT are acts of cowards evading accountability

“It takes very little to irk the President as mere mention of the words justice and accountability puts his entire government in the defensive. Sending his spokesperson who has reached “roque-bottom” after dropping any knowledge of human rights, justice, and accountability like hot pieces of potato to pursue his political ambitions, the Duterte regime is trying yet again to undermine the efforts of individuals and organizations, that of a global people’s court, to hold his government to account. The Duterte government can dismiss the International People’s Tribunal (IPT) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) all they want, but it will not stop us from speaking truth to power,” said Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay, in reaction to Malacanang Spokesperson Harry Roque’s recent statement on the IPT.

Palparan’s conviction is a step forward for justice

“We welcome the court’s decision to convict Palparan for the charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention of disappeared University of the Philippines (UP) students Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan. This is a step forward for justice, though partial for so long as Karen and Sherlyn remain missing and numerous other violations remain unresolved,” said Karapatan deputy secretary general Roneo Clamor.

Duterte regime a danger to the Filipino people - Karapatan

“President Duterte, a fanatic of dictator Ferdinand Marcos and former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, continues to attack the Filipino people through his counter insurgency program Oplan Kapayapaan (OpKap) in full throttle. A trying-hard copycat of Marcos’ martial law, Duterte has also signed the death sentence of poor Filipinos under its war on drugs and counterinsurgency campaign. He followed the blood trails of his fascist role models and even facilitated their rehabilitation and return to power,” said Roneo Clamor, Karapatan Deputy Secretary General during a Black Friday protest held by various groups  in front of Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
