Karapatan, progressive groups call for immediate dismissal of false charges against peace consultantsSubmitted on Fri, 05/20/2016 - 13:25
Karapatan welcomes the proposal of presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to release all political prisoners through a general, unconditional and omnibus amnesty.
“This will partly give justice to the political prisoners, whose rights were violated,” said Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general.
Karapatan calls on presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider the planned appointment of Lt. Gen. Ricardo Visaya as Armed Forces Chief of Staff. Visaya is a protégé of Ret. Gen. Jovito Palparan, known as ‘The Butcher’ because of his bloodied human rights record.
The 2016 election campaign frenzy comes to a close. By far, this seemed the most farcical, nastiest, and most hysterical presidential elections in the post-Marcos era—a sign of how far the elite and foreign-dominated system has deteriorated and broken down.
As votes are cast on May 9, and as the nation awaits the results of the elections, Karapatan urges the Filipino people to remember:
1. The human rights violations committed by the BS Aquino’s blood-soaked “tuwid na daan”, now led by Aquino clone Mar Roxas.
The 2016 campaign period for the national elections will soon conclude as Filipinos cast their votes on May 9.
Please join us in calling for an end to the string of violence, harassment and red-tagging committed against persons and groups to smear legitimate electoral campaigns that put forward the advocacies of peoples and sectors. As the violent and fraudulent character of this electoral process unfold and intensify, we call on everyone to condemn the killing of Emil Go, a volunteer for the Cerbito for Governor Movement, as well as the harassments done against its volunteers. Moreover, we condemn the continuing series of red-baiting against progressive candidates and partylist groups. There is no place for such in a supposedly democratic process.
Karapatan today called on the people to be vigilant of the maneuvers by the Aquino regime to ensure the victory of the Liberal Party candidates, the flag-bearers of the blood-stained “tuwid na daan.”
As he is laid to rest today, Karapatan conveys its highest esteem and tribute to His Excellency Most Reverend Julio Xavier Labayen, OCD and Prelate Emeritus of Infanta, who passed away in the morning of April 27, 2016 at the age of 89.
