On the trumped up charges vs Bayan leaders, Karapatan paralegal vis protests during 2017 ASEAN Summit

The trumped up charges against Karapatan paralegal Neil Legaspi and Bayan leaders Renato Reyes and Teddy Casino all came from the hyper-imagination of the Task Force ASEAN and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Karapatan paralegals saw first-hand how TF ASEAN, thru CIDG operatives, engaged in a scriptwriting workshop at the Manila Police District on November 12, 2017, inventing facts and statements of the arresting police officers until the wee hours of the morning the next day and doggedly insisting on filing all the absurd cases, when we were assisting Legaspi.

Neil Legaspi

It was also the CIDG who insisted on illegal arrest of Legaspi, the carnapping and illegal search, and theft of items inside Karapatan’s van on the same day when more than 20 protesters were injured in the PNP’s violent dispersal of the rally expressing opposition to the US-Duterte regime. We are in fact mulling over countercharges of carnapping and illegal search and seizure against CIDG operatives O. Silla, E. Ocampo, R. Siochi, J. Florendo, and Padua and TF ASEAN officials regarding this.

Through efforts of Karapatan, the National Union of Peoples Lawyers and Makabayan representatives, Legaspi was released later this afternoon, with the charges against him referred for further preliminary investigation. Custody of Karapatan’s vehicle was also turned over this afternoon.

Yesterday, at least 123 protesters from progressive groups were injured by the PNP, along with its use of the LRAD sonic weapon. Indeed, the Duterte government’s despicable ways to suppress the people’s right to assemble and to seek redress of grievances through both brutal and insidious means merit condemnation, especially amid its disgusting red carpet welcome of fascists like US Pres. Donald Trump in the ASEAN Summit.
