As Int’l Human Rights Day approaches: Duterte is turning PH red with killings, bombings

Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay today joined other fellow convenors of the Movement Against Tyranny in announcing plans to mount a nationwide mass action on December 10, 2017 to “oppose the Duterte regime’s escalating fascist attacks against the people and its imposition of a full-blown dictatorship.”

Karapatan will also kick-off its December activities towards International Human Rights Day this afternoon, with a Black Friday protest with relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings in Duterte’s drug war, counter-insurgency and all-out war in Mindanao.

Today, Karapatan also launched an interactive map incorporating cases of extrajudicial killings, documented massacres, and incidents of bombings and forced evacuation, all in line with the counter-insurgency war of the Duterte regime.  The said map can be viewed through the following link: www.karapatan.org
.

“The Duterte regime’s Oplan Kapayapaan and other fascist policies have ravaged the entire country. The map shows documented cases, but many more abuses and violations are happening without the benefit of documentation. Suffice it to say, this is already telling of the real human rights situation on the ground. The State’s fascist, bloodthirsty hounds are committing gross abuses left and right, using the resources of the Filipino people to purchase bombs and weapons that terrorize whole communities – all with the full approval of their deranged commander-in-chief,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay.

As of October 2017, Karapatan has documented 104 victims of political killings, 4 massacres, and 20 incidents of forced evacuations, and 17 cases of aerial bombardment.  Such abuses are perpetrated primarily by the AFP and the PNP, in connivance with paramilitary units and other goons under their control. The attacks are in line with the US-driven counterinsurgency program, which facilitates and funds the arrest, killing, and bombing of communities considered “enemies” by the State.

Duterte, as of latest, has uttered another verbal threat: a “shoot-to-kill” order against the New People’s Army (NPA). Palabay responded that “even without this order, this fascist regime has already been shooting people suspected as members and supporters of the NPA. For this anti-people government, anyone with an advocacy is an enemy.”

Karapatan Southern Mindanao has initially reported the killing of another peasant organizer last November 29, 2017. Rodrigo Timoteo, a peasant activist and member of Compostela Farmers Association (CFA), was gunned down by suspected elements of the 66th IBPA in Brgy. Mambusao, Compostela, Compostela Valley.

“The violations in Mindanao, in Duterte’s own backyard, are unassailable, particularly. Timoteo and many others who were killed in line with Duterte’s counterinsurgency program were targeted because they were perceived as members of the NPA. With another verbal threat in tow, this will again have gross implications on the ground, especially for members and leaders of progressive organizations already red-tagged by the military. The Southern Mindanao Region (SMR) has the most number of activists and members of progressive organizations killed,” Palabay said.

Karapatan’s secretary general added that “the Duterte regime is relentless – not in upholding human rights but in violating it. The cuckoo is isolating himself further from the people, turning the country red with the blood of his constituents. Now, this President is parading again in military camps, repeating the same ramblings and escalating his threats. Falling fast into lunacy, Duterte is now spouting a distorted notion of a revolutionary government, which is just martial law in essence. Who is he kidding? Duterte has chosen to be the full embodiment, the proud representative of this corrupt, repressive and oppressive system,” Palabay ended.
